The Optical Fire Director system has been developed to provide stabilized line-of-sight lookout data for target acquisition and to control weapon direction in emergency mode.
The system consists of two main items of equipment
The Optical Fire Director comprises a deck mounted pedestal with a rotating head, and a platform on which an operator stands. Binoculars are mounted at eye-level on an elevating arm. The platform height is adjustable to allow for different height of operators.
The operator can use a joystick to control the stabilized platform in both training and elevation, thus allowing him to track a target. The platform can also be controlled remotely from external systems.
Stabilized training and elevation data can be sent to other weapon or control systems. The Director Below Decks Cabinet contains the gun interface unit and supplies power for all the electronics and for the drive motors.
